palanki-narayana Major General Sir David Ocherlony (1758-1825) had an eventful life. Born in US, shifted to UK, served East India Company against Sikhs, Marathas and Nepalis. After retirement, he was known for evening rides around Delhi with his 13 Muslim wives, each seated on a separate elephant. In 1969 the West Bengal government dedicated the monument to Indian freedom fighters and renamed it Shaheed Minar.
